3 Budget-Friendly Ways to Eat Healthier

I think most people want to eat healthy. We really do. But unfortunately, a lot of healthy foods can be really expensive. Those fancy foods just seem so out of reach!

But what if you could eat better without breaking the bank?

Here are three easy and cost-effective changes you can make that will improve your nutrition.

1. Switch to Whole Grains

If you’re not already buying whole grain products, this is an easy place to start. Whole grains like brown rice, whole wheat flour, or whole wheat pasta are complex carbohydrates — much healthier than their simple carbohydrate counterparts. For usually $0.50 to $1 more, you can get lots more fiber and consume something that doesn’t spike your blood sugar in the same way that white rice or white flour do. (White Great Value penne is $0.82, while whole wheat Great Value penne is $1.00.) If you haven’t made the switch to whole grains yet, do it today!

2. Ditch the Drinks

Perhaps one of the best ways to help your bodies and your budget is to ditch the drinks! Most drinks you can buy at the store either have lots of added sugar, artificial flavors and coloring, or added sodium.

Whether it’s soda or even juice (see this awesome article from Time magazine about why drinking juice isn’t the greatest), your body probably doesn’t need those empty calories. So ditch the drinks, switch to water, and save yourself a lot of money! You can maybe even use those extra bucks to buy something that actually adds nutritional value to your diet instead of taking away from it.

3. Eat Kale

Kale gets its own point because, well, it’s just that awesome. For usually around $1 a bunch, this superfood packs a nutritional punch. One cup of raw kale has over 100% of the daily value of vitamins A, C, and K! Try using kale as a base for salads instead of lettuce (which, by the way, costs around $1.50 for a bunch of romaine). Or you can even use kale as a topping on your tacos! The possibilities are endless. (For more on how to prep kale, check out my article here.)

I love shopping for veggies in season, both because they’re fresher and cheaper. But kale is fairly inexpensive all year long, so it’s a great way to improve your nutrition for only a dollar or two.
